The various Colleges, Institutes and Faculties in our University help to foster an interdisciplinary approach to different areas of study and enhance the discouragement of the traditional claim for exclusivity and superiority by each discipline. By so doing a healthy interdisciplinary contribution to studies for the promotion of the life of man on earth is also facilitated.
In order to help our outstanding students face the challenges of our contemporary world, all are invited to make contribution for the realization of the enormous and onerous vision of the Madonna University.
Madonna University was brought into being by the admirable effort of Very Rev. Fr. Prof. EMP. Edeh CSSP OFR. in a bid to salvage the gross decay of the then Education and Morals in the Nigerian Society; especially in schools. The Founder sought to combine provision of holistic education at affordable cost to the benefit of all, rich and poor alike, with sound moral formation of character building. He appreciated that without these any form of education can be turned into a formidable instrument of destruction of the human person.
Madonna University is the first private University in Nigeria and the first Catholic University in Nigeria. Enjoying both Stately and Ecclesiastical approval, it strives to revive in her community the age-long tradition of Catholic Education and the exacting demand of our contemporary society for sound education en-rooted in salubrious life-promoting morality.
Our motto, “Dignitas Scientiae et Moralis” – “Decency in Education and Morals” – serves as a beacon for every member of our university community.

In view of the philosophy, the Faculty of Law aims at producing a law graduate with a level of education to serve as legal adviser to the governments of the day, their agencies, companies, business firms etc. As a law graduate, the student will qualify to be admitted into the Nigerian law school to train further and to qualify as a lawyer. He will then fit into judicial services, legal drafting and advising legislative and administrative functions, criminal prosecution, civil litigation, artitration, administration of a state, and etc.
The Faculty of Law offers a programme of undergraduate study leading to the degree of laws (LL.B) The duration of the programme is based on a five-point (5) years full time frame. The programme is based on a five-point system as recommended by the NUC and incorporated into this programme. The programme is for students with senior school certificate of Education (SSCE) Certificate, General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary level or their equivalent. However, direct entry candidates will be permitted in the second year of the programme. Students’ progress throughout the programme is on a merit system. Students must pass most of all the courses in each year of study before proceeding to the next level. All field courses (if any) must be registered first before fresh courses.
Students who after graduating at the end of their course and wish to be called to the Nigerian Bar will have to proceed to the Nigerian Law School for a year’s professional course as required by Section 5 of the legal Education (Consolidation) Act 1976. The programme is designed to ensure that graduates of law will have a clear understanding of the place and importance of law in society. Because all human activities-social, economic political, etc. takes place within the legal framework, it is necessary that the student of law should have a broad general knowledge and exposure to other disciplines in the process of acquiring legal education. Legal education should therefore, act, first, as a stimulus to stir the student into critical analysis and examination of the prevailing social, economic and political systems of his community and secondly, as an intellectual exercise aimed at studying and assessing the operation, efficiency and relevance of various rules of law in society.
In the formulation of the curriculum presented in this Handbook, care has been taken to ensure that law will be taught as it exist at any given moment and that our students will be comparative in their approach to legal studies, bearing in mind that there are many systems of law- statutory law, common law- customary law and Islamic Law currently in operation. The programme seeks to introduce students to law, empower him with many principles of judicial process and legal development and equip him with basic tools of legal analysis or methodologies. The programme presents only a very dim light with which a prospective lawyer may see vaguely, the road maps that runs through a university and law school into “the temple of justice” where he will live all the days of his life. The programme is not designed to make him an expert in any field of law, but to enable him see in a caliginous light what openings are available to him as a student. He can then make a more sensible choice where to move in and pitch his tent in the legal field; there he would specialize by acquiring the necessary and relevant tools, skills, tricks and experience, which will guide him successfully through his life’s journey with the law.
